The Grass Is Greener (and Taken Care Of For You!) On The Other Side: Considering The Benefits of Independent Living

July 9, 2020

Jessica and Lee had owned their home since 1980. They’d held onto the house long after their two children had moved on and started families of their own. They loved the neighborhood and the school where he taught was a bike ride away. But as they settled into retirement, they realized they no longer needed a 5-bedroom house anymore, or wanted to deal with the work and expense of maintaining the home.

Jessica’s best friend and husband had recently moved into a nearby 55+ community and loved it. The property was immaculately taken care of. 24-security made sure the homes were safe. And if they needed help even with something as routine as changing a lightbulb, the maintenance staff was a phone call away. When they found a 2-bedroom apartment was available, they jumped at the chance.

Independent living is simply any housing arrangement designed exclusively for older adults, generally those aged 55 and over. Housing options vary, from apartment-style living to freestanding homes. In general, the housing is friendlier to aging adults, often being more compact, with easier navigation and maintenance or yard work taken care of by staff.

Most communities offer amenities, such as on-site recreational centers or clubhouses. These are ideal to connect with others and join community activities, such as playing cards, holiday gatherings, continuing education classes, or movie nights. Independent living facilities may also offer facilities such as a swimming pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Additional offerings can include onsite spas, beauty and barber salons, daily meals, and basic housekeeping and laundry services.

Since independent living facilities are aimed at older adults who need little or no assistance with activities of daily living, most do not offer medical care or nursing staff. You can, however, hire in-home help separately as required.

Independent living has made Jessica and Lee’s life easier and they’re enjoying the change. Jessica plays canasta every Thursday with new friends who also live in the community, and Lee is at the gym every morning at 7am, enjoying a walk on the treadmill and discussing the news with other early birds.

Independent living can make your life easier, prolong your independence, and give you the means to thrive in your retirement.

Of course, medical events can happen, where your independence is briefly interrupted and you require home healthcare.  Home healthcare can be as effective as a hospital or skilled nursing facility but isn't always covered by standard health insurance. That’s why it’s important to consider a home healthcare program that can help offset potentially expensive costs.
